The year is 1930. Beautiful, witty Devon is the daughter of a prominent Virginia family. Many men have fallen under her spell, but none has captured her heart, until she meets New York tycoon John Alexander. Their future seems assured they will marry, raise a family, turn their country estate into the best Thoroughbred farm in the nation. But what Devon cannot foresee are the conflicts that will drive away her husband or the tragedy that will devastate their marriage. Be transported from lush Virginia hunt country to sophisticated New York and the embassies of Paris. Travel from the Hollywood glamour of Hearst castle in its heyday to the turmoil of war-torn Cairo, and the enclaves of aristocratic England. Devon's tale takes you through the decades from peaceful pre-war America to the danger of World War II, and the racial unrest of the South of the 1950s and'60s.

Devon is such a strong character, maybe to strong and independent for her own good, and that's why I think she had some regrets about her daughter. Very interesting story that covers 1930's to 1960's time period, including world war two, and it's effect on her life. Good read that I couldn't put down. Wonderful love story, but also realistic that it takes two to make a marriage and Devon just didn't want to give, I felt bad for her husband John, he was always trying to please her!

Had it all, happiness, sadness, excitement, and history. I loved it. I was sorry when it ended, but loved the ending.
This story has something for everyone especially if you are a horse lover. While horses are not the main thing, there is a beautiful love story ( stories ) as well as grief, sadness and finally redemption. The heroine , Devon , despite a life of luxury, proves to be courageous and strong despite a number of setbacks. This is a very good read !
This is an enjoyable story with in-depth characters and an engaging plot. It explores the issues of sexism and racism without being preachy and provides interesting insight in what it's like to be in woman in the 1930s. This would be an excellent choice for a book club because it brings up lots of interesting questions and issues!
I loved this book from cover to cover. It was rich in history, and the characters fascinated me. I found it so interesting to read about the life and times of from the 30's to the 60's. I was a History major in college, and this story brought it to life! I was particularly fascinated by the description of Cairo. Devon, the main character, is a woman of strong character who endures tragedies and celebrates triumphs. McGehee's gift of language shines throughout. I have recommended it to all my friends!
There is something special about reading a book set in a familiar location - the senses seem to come a little bit more alive with each description - so I was fully immersed in Devon's world from the get go as I sat on the front porch overlooking the verdant rolling countryside of northern Virginia. But I soon discovered, when the setting switched to unfamiliar New York City, that I could have been in Fiji or South America, and still have remained equally spellbound - such is Ms. McGehee's ability to transport her reader to other lands and times. Her characters are real, complete with flaws and failings. They struggle and suffer and err; but they also adapt and recover and grow - and with them, we readers do as well. There's nothing better than a book that teaches us something new - expands our horizons, makes us reconsider - while entertaining us from start to finish. So, if you're looking to spend a little time traveling with intriguing companions, I suggest you order your copy today. You definitely won't regret it.
This is my kind of book. It follows a family through most of their lives. Yes, there is sex described but I did not find it gratuitous. The characters were well developed and the reader follow them through much of their lives. I loved the horse aspect of this read and that is what drew me in first. But the story kept me reading. I hope Ms MdGehee writes a sequel and takes the characters further.
Devon Richmond, a beautiful, rich, southern miss grows into a strong business woman, the first woman thoroughbred racing trainer, and a cancer survivor. You follow Devon as an opinionated, 25 year old contemplating spinsterhood to a mature woman who has experienced and given up true love, the death of her daughter, and a brief conflict with the Klu Klux Clan. Although there were times that I thought the story line moved too slowly I enjoyed its whisper of history as she lived through romance, pain, World War II and into the civil rights movement. I struggled with giving this book a 3 or 4 star rating.
