Set in the years from 1961 to 1969, it is the story of a young man from small town rural New Zealand with a burning desire to become a famous guitarist.
Dave buys his first guitar and promptly butchers it to make it electric. He starts a band with his friends and they enter a talent quest.
When he is asked to join an existing band “The Drifters” Dave dumps his friends. Later the band breaks up, and Dave restarts it, rapidly establishing it as one of the best local bands in the area. They play all around the Waikato dance halls, do a regular beach resort gig over the next few summers, back well known NZ artists, record a demo and have a lot of fun. In the process they manage to play a lot of music, get in and out of trouble, stumble in and out of girlfriend relationships, drink a lot of beer and eat a lot of takeaways.
The band goes all out for four years, with an occasional change of line-up and personnel (especially drummers) and finally breaks up.
After a short break Dave and a friend start a local nightclub, the “Bluimage”, for teenagers with a new band called “Mode”, and have great success. However, all good things have to come to an end, and Dave is finally faced with a serious decision about his future.
Based on the author’s diaries and his personal experience of those times playing in bands it is amusing, sad, exciting and always entertaining.

Knowing the author as a friend means I might be biased but I really enjoyed a look back and the familiar names coming up from long ago. I enjoyed his writing style which carried me along at a fast pace. Although the story was not fully autobiographical it came across very authentic and you could feel this teenage boy's passion to be a great musician in a time of great music.Product details

The Beat Goes On talking 'bout my generation eBook David Clark Reviews
Athoroughly enjoyable read. What innocent times as these lads form and reform their band in small town NewZealand - beer seems to have been the height of their depravity !
The writing style is such that it's very easy to read with many LOL moments. A lot of fun for the boys in the band and a lot of fun for the reader.
a fun walk down memory lane and that an era that only exists now in our memories
Great Hits and Memories. Good discretion as well.
This is an excellent read for anyone interested in what life was like in the 60's. It would make a great movie.
Excellent read and revelations of a generation that former musicians will relate to.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book as it allowed me to share a period where I never actually took any part. It gave me an insight into the life and times of Mike the Hat whom I met and married in 1972 when I was 18. I can relate to some of the characters better now if they come up in conversation. But it is his memories and I have a piece of it........and he used the kindle for the first time ever too.
